In almost all cases, yes. Swiss German dialects are not understood in Germany, and written Swiss High German carries its own vocabulary shaped by French influence. Audiences in Switzerland hear the difference after two syllables, which is why voice overs for the Swiss market are recorded by Swiss speakers.

My name is Andy Zimmermann and I have been working as a freelance Swiss voice over artist since 2011. I record your texts according to your brief: exciting, entertaining, neutral, warm, funny or serious, whatever suits your product best.

My voice is particularly suited if you are producing for a Swiss client or need a country-specific version of an international campaign. European agencies book me for authentic Swiss German, a variant that neither AI voices nor German speakers get right.

Three variants, one speaker

I record in three variants, and switch between them within the same session if a campaign needs it:

Zurich German, urban and progressive, from the harder city accent to a softer variant closer to Winterthur and Aargau.
Bernese German, warm and trusted. My softened Bernese hits the «neutral middle» that national campaigns ask for.
High German with Swiss credibility, German without a German colouring, in any degree of Swissness you need.

English is available as a foreign-language extra: my Swiss origin is not obvious, but audible. On request also as deliberately bad Swiss English, with a wink. You can hear both in the samples on this page.

The path to becoming a professional voice over artist

I have worked in the media and event industry since 2001. As a technical staff member in the web TV department of one of the largest Swiss media companies, I was responsible not only for clean sound on video contributions, but was also booked regularly as the voice for editorial pieces, advertising formats and billboards. A casting for a radio station finally settled it, since 2011 I have been working as a freelance voice over artist in Switzerland.

I trained with the Swiss voice coaches Mark Baer and Gabriela Leutwiler and the German trainer Michael Zimmerer, and I keep training at Speech-Academy.com. For High German I work with Kathrin Geissmann. I am a member of the Swiss association of professional speakers (VPS).
