Swiss German or German for videos?
By Andy Zimmermann, voice over artist

Swiss companies often want a voice in written German, that is High German, for their videos. I have described in more detail here, for my German clients, why that is. In such cases voices from Germany are frequently used, since they do after all speak (almost) perfect German. On top of that, Germany naturally offers a far larger choice of voices, and the prices are usually lower. What is more, the Swiss are used to this High German from television and understand it perfectly. So why book a Swiss person for a voice over at all? The simple answer:
A fellow countryman comes across as more likeable to the home audience.

And that is precisely what many clients, agencies and sound studios forget. I always encourage my potential clients to consider whether this local colour pays into the goal of the communication measure. It may well be that a commercial for an international brand wants to be perceived as international, and that a German voice is therefore the better fit. For a communication measure by a Swiss company aimed at the Swiss market, or by an international brand that now also wants to position itself as a Swiss product, I regard a professional Swiss voice over artist as the better choice.
