Swiss words in the new Duden

The latest edition of the Duden has been in the shops since Wednesday. Swiss television devoted an item on the Tagesschau news to the words contributed by Switzerland. It gives a brief insight into the Helvetic words used in Switzerland when speaking and writing German (that is, not Swiss German).

Professional Swiss voice over artists use such ‘Helvetisms’ deliberately, depending on the situation, for productions aimed at the Swiss market. Small refinements of this kind create exactly the closeness and familiarity that clients are after when they go looking for a Swiss voice.
