Voice over recordings during the coronavirus pandemic
By Andy Zimmermann, voice over artist

In 2020 our world changed overnight. What was the most ordinary thing for us as people is suddenly no longer possible. Meeting in person has been postponed indefinitely. New formats are needed. They are not really new, but like it or not we have to get used to them and shape the virtual world deliberately. How can the exchange between teams, clients, suppliers and other stakeholders, so important after all, be made meaningful for everyone taking part?
Audio and video productions with voice over artists can offer a good answer here. With the right technical equipment, the voice is available virtually and at short notice. In a pandemic, services are preferably used without physical contact. Until recently, elaborate advertising productions placed great value on having the voice talent present in the agency’s sound studio. For large national campaigns that setup has been the preferred choice for years. As in many other industries, the pandemic has massively accelerated digitalisation, and so it has now become perfectly acceptable to run even large productions entirely remotely.
What I have been actively offering for more than five years is now becoming standard practice: a recording via live streaming, with no physical contact between the sound studio or client and the voice. Besides a professional recording booth and high quality audio hardware, that also calls for a solid internet connection and the right tools. Even though the technical equipment and the know-how of the voice over artist only influence the result up to a point, they still matter for getting a production done efficiently for everyone involved. You will find some technical details about my setup on my sound studio page.
